Toshiba Portégé R600-108 12.1in Ultra-Portable

Last year Toshiba caused a few geek hearts to flutter when it launched the Portégé R500. It was, as the company was always keen to point out, the lightest notebook in the world, weighing a mere 755 grams in its lightest configuration. By anyone's standards it was impossibly svelte, but its claims, though true, were made somewhat hollow due to a number of issues. These included some rather dubious build quality, a disappointing screen and battery life that barely deserved the name. Fine, it was the lightest notebook you could buy, but that claim came at a cost.

Toshiba has now released its replacement, the Portégé R600, though outwardly the updated R600 looks exactly the same as the R500. Save for a matte black bezel surrounding the screen, the whole machine is finished in a metallic silver that's durable and fairly easy on the eye, too. It might lack the glitz and glamour espoused by some, but this is a serious notebook for serious people and in this regard it's a well considered and appropriate design.

One thing that has changed, for the better we might add, is the build quality. One of our more damning complaints about the R500 was its often flaky build. Panels had altogether too much flex for comfort but more worrying was how, in some places, panels simply didn't fit properly. Given its light construction some flex is unavoidable, as you can see in the video review, but on the whole the R600 is much improved in this department.

This improvement includes the keyboard and though there's some flex here, too, keys have a reassuring depth and feel that ensures swift and error free typing. This is aided by a more or less faultless layout and the useful addition of Page Up and Down keys just below the Return key, making scrolling through large documents that bit easier. This said, we did sometimes find ourselves hitting these instead of the Shift key, but this is the kind of issue you'll quickly learn to avoid over prolonged use.

Another important feature of the keyboard is its spill-proofing, something that's less common than you might imagine. This is achieved through a thin absorbent layer that sits between the keyboard and the main body of the machine, soaking up minor spillages that can then be left to dry. This doesn't make it a veritable duck to water, but does provide some peace of mind for anyone who is a little clumsy.

Below the keyboard is a perfectly serviceable touchpad and there's a fingerprint reader wedged in between the faux-chrome buttons. This does make the buttons a tad on the small side, but it's not a major issue. It might have been nice had Toshiba added a trackpoint in addition to the touchpad, since this is always a useful feature on a business machine, but given the space constraints we can understand why it hasn't.

NOKIA : N79

The Nokia N79 might get overshadowed by some of its flashier N series siblings like the Nokia N96 but it should not be ignored. Admittedly, there are some minor design flaws, but the pros outweigh the cons on this handset. Like the rest of the N series, multimedia is the star and the N79 stands out as an excellent camera phone, boasting high-quality images and advanced features.

The Symbian smartphone also offers the full gamut of wireless options as well as a productivity suite and e-mail. It's a device that can keep up with multimedia mavens and mobile professionals alike. While not cheap, the Nokia N79 is more affordable than some of the newer N series models (while offering many of the same features) and is one of our favorites from that family.

The Nokia N79 might have a simple candy-bar shape, but it's quite a good-looking phone. The handset is nice and slim at 4.3 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and 3.4 ounces, so it feels comfortable and light in the hand and will easily slip into a pants pocket. The attractiveness comes from the white face and chrome edges that gives the N79 a very modern and fresh look.

The smartphone also ships with three interchangeable back plates (called XpressOn smart covers) in varying colors (white, red, and brown) so you can switch up the look of the phone depending on your style or mood. Even cooler, the phone's theme will change with the cover. For example, the background color will match whatever smart cover you choose.

he N79's QVGA display measures 2.4 inches diagonally and supports 16 million colors and a 320x240-pixel resolution. There's a built-in accelerometer, but it's not a touch screen so you'll have to use the controls below the display to navigate the phone, which include two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, a Menu shortcut, a multimedia key, a back button, and a touch-sensitive navigation toggle with a center select key.

Navigation wheel aside, we're not huge fans of the controls, since they're small and cramped. For example, the soft keys and Talk and End buttons are tiny slivers (similar to those on the Nokia N82) so they're not very comfortable to press, and the menu and clear buttons are crammed in between them so they're a little awkward to access.

The alphanumeric keypad offers a slightly better user experience, though not ideal, either. You get four rows of buttons but there's no spacing between them to create individual keys. This didn't pose a problem to us, however, since the numbers were far enough from each other. What is a bit troublesome is that the rows are pretty narrow so users with larger thumbs might find themselves hitting the number above or below the intended button. That said, we do prefer the N79's styling over its predecessor, the Nokia N78.

Along the left spine, you'll find a microSD expansion slot and a micro USB port--which are both protected by an attached cover--and the power connector. Meanwhile, the right side has a volume rocker, a camera activation/capture button, and dual speakers. On top of the unit, there's a lock switch, a 3.5mm headphone/AV jack, and a power button. The camera and flash are located on the back, and the lens is protected by a sliding cover.

The Nokia N79 comes packaged with a wide variety of accessories, including the aforementioned back plates, a travel charger, a USB cable, a wired headset, a 4GB microSD card, video-out cables, a software CD, and reference material. Features
As with all Nokia N series models, the Nokia N79 is about multimedia and being able to access and share content right from your phone. The N79 doesn't offer anything the other N series handsets don't, but that's not a bad thing since these smartphones are fully stocked and offer some advanced multimedia capabilities.

The built-in media player supports MP3, AAC, eACC, eACC+, and WMA files as well as podcasts. You can create playlists on the fly, and there's support for album art, repeat, and shuffle modes. Audiophiles will appreciate the fact that there's an equalizer to tweak sound, and we're sure everyone will be pleased that the smartphone is equipped with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and 3D stereo sound speakers. As we noted earlier, the N79 includes a wired headset, which isn't very comfortable, but it features a built-in tuner so you can use the headphones to listen to FM radio.

There are several ways to get music onto your device. When you connect your N79 to your computer via USB cable, you can choose from several modes, including mass storage, media transfer, PC Suite, and image transfer. In most of those modes, it's just a matter of drag-and-drop. There's always the option to load music via microSD card as well. While the Nokia N79 is built to support the Nokia Music Store where you can browse and purchase tracks over the air, it hasn't fully launched in the United States. We've been waiting for the U.S. store to open its virtual doors for a long time, and when asked about it at CES 2009, Nokia said it still has plans to do so but couldn't give an exact date. Too bad, since we think it'd add much more value to the N series phones.

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5

It is quite a while since I've reviewed a handset from Motorola. Back in June I took a look at the ROKR E8 and the Z10, but since then there hasn't been a lot going on. Regular TrustedReviews readers will, for instance, know that Motorola is in a spot of bother, but then that is hardly a unique position at the moment.

So it is with an open mind that I take a look at the MOTOZINE ZN5 which I found at prices up to £50 on Pay Monthly from O2 as I wrote this review. This handset was announced mid-year and at the time it was thought of as something of a coup thanks to twinning up with Kodak on the camera front.

Yes, the camera only shoots to 5-megapixels when we've had a flurry of 8-megapixel jobs in the recent past - with Sony Ericsson's offering still to be reviewed by me. But as I keep repeating, megapixel count alone is not enough, and the Kodak involvement could be a real boost. We'll see.

All the camera capability in the world is only ever part of a phone's appeal, though. With that in mind I'm not really sure why Motorola has decided to ignore 3G and instead make this phone a quad-band GSM handset with GPRS and EDGE. This is doubly eyebrow-raising as the phone does have Wi-Fi which I'm much more used to seeing coupled with 3G than without it.

This is a big beastie of a phone, and in my view a bit too tall for comfortable pocketing at 118mm. It is 50.5mm wide and for the most part 12mm thick, though this rises to 16mm at the camera lens. It weights 114g. Build quality is good. The battery cover is metal and the rest of the casing feels tough.

I quite like the grey and black colour scheme which when coupled with the front button lights that offer a Christmas tree like combination of white, purple, green and red looks quirky but not unattractive. Purple is a very important colour here with camera related buttons and screen theme all using it.

SONY ERICCSON : XPERIA

First things first, the Xperia looks fantastic. There's a real wow factor to the design as its surprisingly compact, especially when you consider that it houses a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard within its small frame. It also feels very solid - much more so than, say, the HTC S740. In part this is because there's more metal used in its shell. The battery cover, for example, is an all metal affair not simply plastic with a metallic coating. However, the extra expanse of metal does make it feel a little heavier in your hand.

Around the edge of the handset you'll not only find a dedicated camera button and a volume rocker switch, but also a standard mini USB port for syncing and charging the device along with a full sized headphone jack. The latter is particularly welcome as it hasn't even yet found its way onto most of the company's Walkman music phones.

The keyboard is naturally one of the device's key features and you only have to apply a small amount of pressure with your thumb to slide it smoothly out from under the main body of the phone. As it slides out it causes the screen to tilt slightly upwards so it sits at a nice viewing angle.

This combined with the fact that the rear of the unit is completely flat means that unlike HTC's S740, you can happily type with two fingers while the handset sits on a desk. The keys are backlit and well spaced, but Sony has not added dedicate numerical keys. This may disappoint some, but we think the extra space this allows between the keys makes it a sensible decision.

3G, WiFi, Touchscreen Archos 7

The Archos has deservedly been causing quite the stir, so it is with a sizeable smile on my face that I can tell you its bigger brother is now hitting shop shelves too. Formally announced back in August alongside the 5, the Archos 7 has been slightly longer coming to the boil but it brings with it a spec sheet which genuinely tries to do something different with the PMP market.

First up, like many an Archos player of the past, the 7 has a (yep) 7in display. As with the 5, this is touchscreen and it is backed up by a choice of 160GB or 320GB HDDs, WiFi, optional 3.5G, and the ARM Cortex superscalar CPU. Consequently web browsing is very much on the table along with MSN Messager, an email client and integrated Flash 9 support as well as a large virtual Qwerty keyboard.

Archos strengths like remote TV access and recording are bundled too though its weaknesses also raise their heads such as paid codec support. Throw over some of your hard earned cash however and the likes of 720p HD video content and video podcasts will become available. Accessories such as a DVR Station, mini dock, second removable battery and even helmet cam (the possibilities scare me) will appear alongside it.

Perhaps the best bit however is the Archos 7 launches immediately and is being stocked by all the big boys including Amazon, Comet, Dixons, Micro Anvika, PC World and so forth. As you might expect RRPs aren't cheap at £359.99 (160GB) and £439.99 (£320) but then again the 7 is almost closer to a UMPC than PMP these days...

Samsung i8510 (Innov8)

You might have thought S60 was the domain of Nokia and Nokia alone, but it pops up here in its 3rd Edition with Feature Pack 2. Outwardly, the software looks rather different to that on a Nokia phone thanks to a custom user interface, but as you dig around the menus and applications you see that it is S60 to the core.

Essentially, the presence of S60 makes this both a multimedia capable phone and a competent smartphone. Both factors are enhanced by all that built-in memory for storing stuff and by the large screen. At 2.8 inches, you won’t beat it for size on an ordinary mobile and it is clear, sharp and crisp, though I think it would have benefited from more than its 320 x 240 pixels.

It is perhaps no surprise that the i8510 is being compared to Nokia’s N95. Not so much the original version but the improved 8GB one.

But I reviewed the N95 8GB late last year, and a whole heap of stuff has happened in the mobile phone world since then, which the i8510 reflects nicely.
